Movie Makers

With our inquiry learning about what makes plants great coming to an end, we thought we would like to be story tellers.

We watched a variety of Maori legends to piggy back some ideas.  We also watched one of Mrs P's teacher friends movie about nits.

We have been looking at the characters and the settings.

Leave a comment about how the set was made (what materials were used) and how the character is made (strings, sock puppet, painting)

  • Name of the movie
  • How the character moves
  • How the background was made
  • Name of who left the comment

Here are some of the movies we like

Rata and the God of the forest

Here are some more movies we like

coke, hand sanitiser, sugar water, tea, and worm pee. We also put one is in the and one is in a pumpkin. I am watering mine with with coke. The ones that were watered with worm pee, hand sanitiser and coke have grown. We are growing them all in a bottle. I think that the worm pee will grow the  best. the peas that are growing in the pumpkin are the tallest. We put the ones in the bottles out side and the pumpkin is by  the window.

Water vs Pepsi

One of the class blogs Mrs P follows is Team Kakapo's class blog.  They have some predictions about our wonderings, What liquids help seeds to grow the best?

Hi everyone in LC10 we in Team Kakapo thought that we would share our predictions with you.

We have two queries or questions
Olsen - You are using cold tea to feed them aren't you?
Jackson (you won't know me I'm a cool new guy)  Is the coke flat or bubbly?
Tim - Are you doing one lot with just water?  (Mrs H a control group)
Maddison W - Are you putting the same amount of liquid fertiliser on each day?
Mrs H - You have set up all the other conditions the same, ie same sized pots, soil,  etc so that you are having a fair test?

Our predictions are
coke - 1
worm pee - 7
hand sanitiser  - 0
Sugar water - 13
Tea - 4

So that's what we think.    Good luck and please let us know if the flavour is affected by the liquid fertiliser.

Dear Brody...

One of our class mates, Brody is away on an amazing adventure to USA.  He has written to us and told us about his travels so far.  We are using Google Maps to track where he is going.

Hi LC11 and LC10

We are now in Naperville staying with uncle Hamish and auntie Lauren.

We had a great time at the rugby. There were so many people there.

Here are some pictures.

From Brody

What are some things you'd like to see while Brody is traveling through USA?  Leave a suggestion and he may post some photos.

Here's another email from Brody.  We have left comments for Brody in the comment section.  Let's see if we remember how to be a "relational" or "extended abstract" thinker when leaving blog comments....

Hi Mrs Poulsen

I am having a great time on my holiday.

We left Chicago and we are now in Los Angeles. Before we left Chicago we saw Big Hero 6 on an advanced screening. It was super cool!  Do you think we could have been the first NZ kid to see it?

Yesterday Dads friend Swifty took us to a live NBA game. We sat really really close to the game. It was Clippers vs Portland.  The LA clippers won. We were cheering really loud with our thunder sticks and we used the thunder sticks to make Portland miss shots and it worked 3 or 4 times. We nearly made it on TV.

We are now in Swifty's car about to go on a car ferry to Newport Beach.

Tomorrow we are going to Universal Studios

I will write again soon.

Cub Float

On Saturday  I went on the Cubs float at the 150 years of West Melton parade.  It was fun waving at everyone who was there.  We were firing rubber bands with a catapult at people.  There was a tent and a camp fire on the float.  The trailer belongs to my Dad.  At the end of the parade we parked up at the school.  Then I went to the playground with my friends.  Daniel and I had a ride on the mini steam engines, it was awesome!

We did it!

Finally after 4 weeks of making paper origami cranes we have reached our goal of 1,000 cranes.  It has been a busy time as we tried to steal any time we could making cranes, we even made them during our break times and Mrs P made some while Bruce was driving.

We begun the paper crane journey for Peace Week. We read Sadako's story about how the bombing in Hiroshima left many families sick even years after the tragedy.  Sadako was 2 when the bomb was dropped but she didn't get leukaemia until she was 12.  In hospital a nurse shared a story if she made 1000 paper cranes her wish to get better would become true, but unfortunately Sadako only made 648 before she passed away.

Our buddy class LC 17 helped us make cranes, but it was tricky even watching Youtube.  Some of our buddies quickly learnt how to make them and became experts.  At first we were very slow and Mrs P even needed help from the buddies. But with practice and patience we succeeded! And boy did we feel proud.

Ms Cider's daughter will be visiting Hiroshima as part of her culture exchange, where she will hang our cranes up on the Children's Peace Memorial.

Lucy's Mum visited Hiroshima before Lucy was born and took these photos.

Cranes draped over a statue to the entrance of the Memorial Park.

Peace Week on PhotoPeach

Ewwwwww

Our experiment of seeing which bread would keep longer has resulted in a quote from Liam..."The room is smelling of stinky socks!" It was the perfect time to photograph our evidence.

What can you see?
Here are some of our thoughts...
There is no wonder they call it mouldy bread. Because its an old, it is a bigger loaf and it is made from different materials  Brody

I think the olden day bread got mouldier quicker because it doesn't have the same ingredients in it as the bread now days Yoris

I think that it has mould on it because it has been inside the bag for a long time Leila

Yesterday there was some bread and it was really mouldy and every one smelled it and it smelt yuck Dallas

No wonder it is called mouldy bread

I think our mouldy bread is mouldier because it stayed in the plastic bag for longer Sophie

For Interchange this week Room 10 made Maori bread. We waited for 18 days. It was a long time but finally it started to grow mould Thomas

I  think the mouldy bread  is called Maori bread because it'sbeen in the plastic  bag  too long and it can probably grow mould with no air in the bag Jennifer

I think the Maori bread went mouldy because air could not go through the bag Lilly

Some of us wondered who put strawberry jam on the bread!

This is Bruce's bread after 18 days of incubation.

This is our Maori bread after 16 days of incubation

On Monday LC10 made Maori bread. Then we hung up bread it took 2 or 3 day then we waited for about 20 days then we looked at it. It was all mouldy. It smelt worse than our Dads socks. There was red mould on the Maori bread. The Maori bread was mouldier than the normal                                                           bread.

Filling our buckets!

After a weekend of picking some beautiful daffodils with Ms Crosby from Hadstock farm, our classroom was bright and cheery.  Our buddy class told us about Filling each others buckets, so we thought it would be a great way to fill the teachers and staff's buckets.  Here are some of the compliments we received...

Mrs Coster said "thank you"

Mrs Busch said "you're nicer than James"

Jayden said "ladies before boys"

Ms McKenndry said politely "thank you very much and I'll put them somewhere in the classroom"

Mr T said "thank you I will have those"

Mrs Moake said quietly "thanks for the beautiful flowers"

Ms Crosby said "thanks, I'll put them with the rest of my flowers"

Ms O B said "thank you, you are a star"

Ms Cider said "thanks for the flowers"

Mrs McKee said "you're the Hulk"

Mrs Busch said "could you please go and get a jar for Mrs Bromley so her flowers don't die"

Mrs Mac said "you have made our day"

Mrs Thompson said "are those for us?" "You can have one of Mrs Armstrong's flowers"

Mrs Hyde said "well thank you very much"

Mr D said "how could we fill Mrs P's bucket?" Mr D gave LC 10 a sheet of stickers.

We also learnt that it doesn't cost a thing to make people smile :-)

Leila felt happy filling Mrs Coster's bucket!
James felt grateful because we all gave teachers and staff flowers
Tayla felt good inside because we were giving the flowers away
Brody great because giving out flowers makes me happy!

Buddy time!

Today for buddy time we were blogging buddies.  Mrs Busch told us about a book she shared with her class called Have you filled your bucket today? What does a bucket filler mean? How do you fill your bucket?  Some of our buddies used a google doc and wrote about how we could be bucket fillers...

Other buddies wrote their own stories and will continue to work on these stories through the week.

Boggle Champs

Congratulations to our first champions for Boggle.  We had a three-way tie!

Peace Week

During Peace Week PAKURAKURA read why we are making origami cranes.

This is a famous story called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.
As a class we asked interesting questions as we listened to the first four chapters.

We spoke about how we can stop conflict in our own lives, whether this is at school, at home, with friends or family.  So next time your Mum asks you to tidy your room, don't cause conflict, be peaceful and go and do it!  Mum will love that! :-)
